The laws that Moses mediates to the people of Israel at Mount Sinai (including but not limited to the Ten Commandments) must be viewed in the context of what has come before. The covenantal, Creator God reveals himself to Abraham and then to Moses. He begins to speak more specifically about one family who becomes one nation, and he shows this family and nation how they are to live in covenant with him.
