Our magic has made us insane.
By late March, the fear and anger were aimed as much at Trump as the virus itself. The narratives were intertwined. The virus will devastate us. The president has failed us. The most apocalyptic predictions nearly all came from people on the left. Some of them had warned against anti-Chinese hysteria in January and February and downplayed the threat of the virus. Now they felt differently.
The sudden collapse of mRNA vaccine efficacy in the summer of 2021 belongs as much to Shakespeare or Sophocles as to science. It was hubris meeting nemesis on the biggest possible stage, the best and the brightest outdoing
themselves once more, Icarus smirking at thirty thousand feet, waving at the sun as his wings drip away. Pride goeth before a fall.
