So...I nod. It’s time for me to play the game.
“I let you out of your cage,” Midas tells me, as if I should be grateful, as if he did any such thing. “No. I let myself out.”
“You’re very floppy.” I rest my head against his firm, muscled chest. “You’re very hard,” I counter. A rich, dark laugh slips from his mouth. “You’ve no idea.”
Same shit, different castle.
“You don’t hate me now.” There’s a narrowing of her eyes. “I tolerate you.” “You’re so warm and fuzzy.”
“I am,” he says without remorse, his sharp jaw tight with tension. “But I’ll be the villain for you. Not to you.”
“You, Slade. I want you.”
His grin widens. “And you’re a gorgeous little liar, but that’s okay,” he says with a shrug. “I’ve made you face your other truths, and I have no doubt I can make you face this one too.” My stomach jumps with a thrill I don’t want to admit. He thinks I’m gorgeous. Okay, yeah, he thinks I’m a liar too, but the takeaway here is the gorgeous part.
It’s time to get a little dirty.
This too? I ask the goddess in her twinkling watch. I had to endure this too?
“It terrifies you, doesn’t it?” I ask. “Knowing that everything you are, hinges on me.” Something dark flickers across his face. “You speak about my punishment, but how about we consider what you deserve?”
“I don’t need anyone to rescue me.”
“I told you, I’ll be the villain for you.” Resolve bolsters my spine. “Yes. But so will I.”
