To understand the story of the War of Independence from the perspective of an African in America, one must first realize that prior to this era, the idea of American patriotism was all but nonexistent, because there was no America. Remember, there was a South Carolina, a Virginia, and other British colonies, but each had its own unique laws and social structures. The only thing that bound these respective groups of white people together for this war was their increasing discontent with their privileged overlords overseas.
