Over the years, there have been too many stories to count in which a parent or spouse or friend sees a loved one breaking down or threatening to harm themselves and calls 911, thinking the response will come in the form of a counselor or perhaps an ambulance. Instead they get a SWAT team, followed by a procession of police sirens and all the attention and spectacle that comes with that. It’s just about the worst imaginable way to treat someone in crisis.
