For a charity event intended to raise funds to combat hunger, it’s ironic that the amount of money hanging off wrists and encircling fingers could likely feed the country’s starving for years.
These people have no clue how the other side lives, but they’ll take any opportunity to pat themselves on the back for a good deed while sipping their flutes of Moët & Chandon.
“Humans are such small-minded creatures. Like little worker ants, breeding and building their little cities and their little lives. They think everything revolves around them, that it should exist only if they can dominate. They kill in the name of their god, believing it the only true god and all others false or evil.”
“I’m a king. For every enemy I face, there are ten I cannot name, but they are always there, waiting for an opening.”
“Saoirse is spiteful, manipulative, and narcissistic. And beauty …” His eyes drift over my features. “Look where that nearly got me before.”
As much as I’d prefer to shrink into the shadows, I haven’t survived this long by playing the lamb when a wolf is needed.
“Are you testing me?” “I’m always testing you, Romeria.” Quietly, he adds, “And you are always testing me.”
“Seers can see across dimensions and into other worlds. They’ve taught us that this is not the only world created by the fates, that there are others with different dynamics and paths of history. Places identical to ours and yet opposite, where humans rule and the immortals and casters skulk in the shadows, hiding their existence.”
The walls you’ve built around yourself to survive are far too thick. Sofie’s vague words strike a chord. That is what she meant. She knew what I was.
“You’ve done everything wrong. You are hotheaded, you speak out of turn and do the opposite of what we agreed to, you antagonize me as if you have no fear of consequence. You continue to lie and deceive me. Your heart bleeds too much for the plight of mortals, and you seem willing to challenge anyone who doesn’t bleed the same.” He sighs, his hazel eyes settling on me, a brilliant kaleidoscope of gold in the setting sun. “You do everything wrong, and yet everything right.”
