But many in Bryan, and in the state and the nation, believed he was their lying sociopath, and anybody who contradicted his increasingly lunatic pronouncements became an enemy of freedom and right. Dr. Amy Acton, the state health chief, faced abuse from Republican members of the state legislature. Representative Nino Vitale accused her of destroying liberty and called her “an unelected Globalist Health Director,” using a slur known to refer to Jews; Acton was Jewish. State senator Andrew Brenner likened Acton’s health mandates to actions taken by Nazi Germany.
