“That’s why I called them TAZ,” she said. “I was reading about ferality and temporary autonomous zones, and the name just kind of stuck. But now that they’re dead, I wanted to bring them back into the wild. I felt like they deserved a more permanent autonomous zone, like on top of a mountain.” Benny thought about this. “You could rename them,” he said. “PAZ . . . ?” She smiled sadly. “That’s a nice idea, but they weren’t permanent.
