But at regular intervals, Thomson introduces footnotes referring to Joule’s work that serve as troublesome critiques. The paper captures the conflict between Carnot and Joule in Thomson’s mind. Though he can’t resolve it, by juxtaposing each side of this internal debate in the same text, he would enable others to join in.
