Alan Mathison Turing was born in London on June 23, 1912, the son of an Englishman who worked as a magistrate in the city of Madras (now Chennai) in India, which at the time was part of the British Raj. Sara Turing, Alan’s mother, had traveled back to England to give birth at a time of growing political unrest in India.
