“Yeah.” Dominic is silent for a few minutes. “Maybe we are like that. We spend most of our time together. We live together. We finish each other’s sentences. Can’t get married though. We’re both guys.” “And you’re straight.” “There is that.”

You’ll find the girl of your dreams too.” “Sure.” “And if you don’t, I’ll marry you.” A giddiness at the mere thought of marrying him spreads through me, even as I feel a little sick for saying it aloud. Dominic turns his head sharply, his hazel eyes focused on me. “What?” Abort. Abort. “Nothing.” My voice sounds strained, even to me. “I was just being stupid.” “You said you would marry me.” “Well, yeah, but I was joking.” Nervous laughter erupts from within me. “It’s not legal anyway.”

“Fuck yeah, forty sounds old. That’s double how long I’ve been alive.” “Almost.” Dominic grins. “Let’s make a deal. If we’re not married when we’re forty, we’ll marry each other.”

My conservative, Catholic parents didn’t know how to deal with it, but they came around, deciding Zach was still Zach, which is where I landed as well with the news. Who really cares who anyone sleeps with and loves? I sure the fuck don’t. Besides, Zach is my ride or die. I have his back no matter what, and I know he has mine.

“Sexuality is a spectrum,” he adds. “Sometimes when there’s a deep emotional attachment, romantic love can follow, regardless of gender.”

You had your head in my lap, complaining about your taste in men, and I reminded you that in just ten years, you could marry me. You laughed and said that would be the best day ever.”

“Why haven’t you brought it up? You know, when we’re sober?” “I don’t know, Zach. Probably because I figured you’d say no. I know what you want. Love, passion, magic. I don’t blame you for holding out for it. Why would you choose me?” Maybe because I’m painfully in love with you? “As far as relationships go, platonically, we’re killing it. We get each other, and that feels really good.”

“Could you do me a favor though?” he asks. “Sure.” “Can you go along with it for a little bit? Until I figure out how to let my parents down easy?” I tilt my head. “You want me to pretend we’re engaged?” “Please? Just until I can come up with a different plan. I have a date Tuesday. Maybe we’ll hit it off, and I’ll somehow find a way to tell my folks about all this.”

know something is on his mind. We’re very symbiotic that way. We always know each other’s moods and tells. When Dominic is stressed out, he plays with his beard a lot, stroking it as if it calms him to do so. When he’s tired, his verbal ability is reduced to one-word answers and grunts. When he’s happy, his smile could melt an iceberg. I’ve always wondered though, what does he look like when he’s horny?

Except for the obvious part of him being straight, we’re actually perfect together. That’s why our business, our friendship, and our living together just clicks.

“Okay, wait. I can do better.” He clears his throat. “Zachary Bryant, will you do me the honor of pretending to be in love with me?” My smile falters, but I nod and coax it back to my face. “Only if you pretend to be in love with me too.” “I don’t think that’ll be too hard. You’re already my favorite person.”

“My cards said I would meet a bearded prince whose heart belonged to someone else. It must be you. You’re the only bearded date this week.”

“I’m not impressed by places or things. I’m impressed by character, humor, and a beard doesn’t hurt.” “I’ve got the beard at least.” “You have all three. That’s why we’re friends. Well, the beard is just a bonus as far as friendship qualities.”

“What kind of wedding?” Tony asks. “You know, the kind where you’re married at the end of it.” Zach grins as he drinks his beer.

“Dom,” I whisper. “What are you doing?” “Kissing,” he replies. “Feeling,” he says, softer this time. “Babe.” The word leaves my lips in a breathless whisper. “Can I touch you?” Dominic asks. “What?” I ask in shock. “Please? Can I touch you?” Squeezing my eyes shut, I nod. “Yes,” I whisper. “Please.”

“My brain just started thinking ‘why didn’t Zach pick him? He’s awesome.’” I start to speak, but Dominic shakes his head no, so I let him continue. “Then Isaac leans in and tells me to be calm. That Sydney is no threat to what I have with you.”

“But the first time I kissed Zach it felt like…” I pause, shaking my head. “Honestly, it felt like I’d been waiting my entire life to kiss him.” “Dude, that’s super romantic.”
