See, that’s where they’re going wrong. What you want to do is embrace the loneliness,
really lean into it until you’re so miserable that you repeatedly turn down offers from gorgeous, young construction workers who pant after you like a sweet little puppy.
Ugh, friends don’t sniff friends, West. Get that through your damn head already.
“If that were true, you wouldn’t have given up asking me out so easily.”
“Did you want me to keep asking?” His voice is low and I hear the barest hint of a tremble in it.
“Sawyer.” He says my name gently. “West, leave it. Please.” I set the pieces down and turn sideways on the couch to face him. “I was trying to make a joke and it fell flat. Can we just let it go?”
One second Sawyer is telling me to drop it, and the next he’s scrambling onto my lap and plastering his lips to mine.
“Don’t,” I say softly. “It’s fine if this didn’t mean anything, if you want it to be a one-time thing, even if you never want us to speak of it again. But for the sake of my sanity, please don’t say it was a mistake.”
“Not for me, but that guy who just walked in looks like he might need something from you,” the man teases. I glance over and find West staring at me like he wants to eat me alive.
“He’s hot.” I smile. “You have no idea.”
How am I supposed to keep from falling in love with him when he’s going to kiss me like that? Like I matter, like he might already be in love with me.
I step closer and dip my head close to his ear to whisper. “You should see what I have on underneath.”
with all the subtlety of a punch in the nuts, to leave me alone with my dad.
“Hey, Stud. Come by the house…” The next words get stuck in my throat for a second, glued there by the fear and uncertainty that’s kept me from fully going for it with West for years. But Daniel is right; if I let the fear win, I’ll lose him, and I can’t stand the thought of that. “I miss you and want to see you,” I finally manage.
“Why didn’t you just say that?” I can hear the smile in his voice. “I’ll be there in a few minutes.”
“Okay, help yourself to anything that catches your eye.” West winks,
