“Am I okay?” Tore’s voice was rough and choked. “Lil bit, you were dragged out of Lake-fucking-Michigan, looking like a goddamn ice cube, before laying unconscious under a pile of blankets for nearly twenty-four hours. I am so far from fine to any fucking extent.”
“We are mates,” I said with a small smile, loving that the term made him feel something so powerful, and then went more serious. “I don’t want you to control yourself. I may be jumpy sometimes, but I know you don’t want to hurt me. I would rather explain how I am feeling than feel like you are holding yourself back from me. I would never want that.”
“Kitten, I am not rejecting this—rejecting us. I just don’t know how to explain what has happened without explaining everything. My sister would be aware of what this mark means, in theory, and I need to have that conversation with you before I have it with her.”
“That's the problem, kitten. I have no fucking doubt that you are the only person that could help me deal with it, and I can’t put that on you. I can’t put any of this on you. Just know that I am not rejecting you, Effie; I am doing my damn best to not scare the hell out of you.”
“This bullshit of running away is done, Ruby. You can either stand up and come upstairs, or I can break the magic around you and possibly hurt your friends.”
“Aanya is staying at my condo for the day instead of coming to campus, something I’m sure her mates will be pissed about, but oh well.”
“I need you to buy stuff, Effie, specifically with my money. I need you to have nice things, because if you don’t, I don’t feel like I’ve done my job as your mate. I don’t feel like I’ve provided for you.”
“Yeah… The one where I fell in the water.” He inhaled and then leaned forward, my eyes fluttering at his closeness. His voice was low and even. “Effie, if you ever refer to yourself nearly drowning or possibly dying of hypothermia as the ‘water thing’ again, I’m going to turn your perfect ass pink.”
“I’ll start at the beginning then. We are descendants of the sun god, and our lineage isn’t Earth-based, exactly, which means that our magic only grows the more we practice. Unlike most wolf shifters, we don’t have a max capacity. There is no ‘alpha’ because kitsune can constantly change and achieve higher.”
Caedmon’s gaze found mine, his eyes widening in surprise and then anger as he took in the figure on my back. Yeah, I expected that, because who in their goddamn right mind would bring Effie here? A sucker who wasn’t going to be able to experience his mate in any way but through smiles and the touches she occasionally offered. That’s who.
“No, I didn’t. I didn’t know if—” His words were cut off as Tore lifted me and carried me towards the kitchen with the parting words, “Well start knowing, Ryder. She’s fucking tiny and needs food. Always.”
“The mythos state that before humans, wolves, or any other magic users existed, there were two gods that roamed the earth: a sun god, who was a kitsune, and a moon goddess, who was a lykos.”
“The dark god, the embodiment of night itself, created humans. It was said that he was the first lover of the moon goddess, who she’d tossed aside once she mated with the sun god. Predictably, he was angry, so he created the mutated and unnatural form of humans, who tempted the kitsune and lykos to mate outside of their species. While there isn’t always much detail on how it occurred over time, it is said that’s how the lycan, fenrir, bitten, and totemic species were created, making the earth filled with the unblessed race of humans and wolves alike.”
“Ever, Effie. You know you can’t leave us, right? In the last week, you’ve become everything to us, to our pack, to our fucking future. Everything. I would love to be a good man and tell you that you have an option to choose to leave us if you weren’t happy…but that would be bullshit. You’re ours, Effie. Absolutely ours.”
“That’s true. None of my mates have ever said anything negative about my appearance.” Aanya looked at me wide-eyed. “If they ever do, tell me and I’ll kill them.” A laugh broke from my lips. “What?” She nodded her head. “Dead. Goodbye. One or several less mates to worry about. Balls chopped off. Done-zo.”
“Yeah, they never left.” Ryder chuckled. “I think they knew you guys would try to go out, which reminds me…” His eyes ran over my outfit. “Make sure to stay in that. I’ll call them up. If I have to suffer, so do they.” * * * “I am going to burn it.” Tore’s low, rumbling voice had me smiling
“I don’t think that’s even enough,” Julian called from the bedroom. “We need to drown it in the lake.” “It’s a pretty dress,” I countered. Dakota sounded amused as I grabbed a hoodie and sweatpants, Tore following me with his gaze and a grumpy expression. “I agree, little wolf. I think it’s very pretty.” “Dakota.” Caedmon shot him a look, his entire body tense. “What?” He grinned. “It would look even prettier on the ground.”
