Charlie’s kind of funny when you can get him to speak without stammering.

Dev is nervous. Dev, who is always so confident, so charming, so extroverted, is nervous at the thought of letting Charlie read his work.
“No one has ever asked me that before.”
Dev tried to understand, which people almost never do.
“I’m worried you don’t know what you deserve.” He grabs Dev’s shoulders. “Six years is a long time to stay.”
“My crush?”
“I think you like that I’m a little weird,”
his beautiful brain works a little differently sometimes.”
It is maybe Dev’s favorite face.
“I think I really like you,”
“You talk about him a lot, and when you look at him, your whole face relaxes,”
Most of the time, Dev is like a human bonfire walking around generously warming everyone with his presence. But burning that bright and that fiercely must be exhausting; no one can sustain it forever.
Charlie really wants to kiss Dev right now.
“I’m not afraid of anything. Except emotional intimacy and abandonment.”
Dev intertwines their fingers, and Charlie had no idea such a simple gesture could feel so huge inside his chest.

Dev knows him and understands him and wants him anyway, and Charlie has never been this attracted to anyone else.
“You make me so fucking happy.”
Charlie flinches at the use of the c-word.
For someone who claims to love love, you’re really good at pushing it away.
Better to end things now than delay the inevitable.”
“Have you thought about, I don’t know, apologizing to him?”
And I… I, like, love you or whatever.”
“You’re one of the funniest, smartest, kindest, most passionate motherfuckers I’ve ever met, Dev. And you deserve a happily ever after, too.”
She’s crying now, too. They make quite the sexy pair.
When things got bad, you would shut me out entirely.”
“You love orchestrating big romantic gestures, Dev, but you’re scared shitless of anything that’s real.
“I’m in love with him.” Jules snorts. “No shit, dumbass.”
“Have you considered just letting yourself love him?”
He tries talking, tries opening up for Charlie the way Charlie opened up for him.
So it just became easier to pretend to be Fun Dev all the time, to put on a smile so he wasn’t such a burden. After all, he had no reason to be sad. Everything was always fine.
