That’s definitely Kara sitting with her friends. Did she come…to watch me? Then it hits me—of course she came to watch me, she’s probably still working on the article. And for some weird reason, that thought…hurts a little.
“I’m not feeding you a pile of BS because I’m supposed to. I meant what I said.”
The kiss, though? It was the most amazing thing I have ever experienced in my life. She wasn’t my first, of course, but it was wow. More than fireworks on the Fourth of July. When she and I locked lips, the world stood still—no, it poured all its goodness onto us. Showered us.
He shrugs as he twirls me onto the dance floor. My stomach somersaults like a gymnast as he wraps his arms around my waist, gently yanking me to his chest. “They got what they needed. Now I want to dance with you.” He lowers my head to his chest before I can demand what the heck that means.
“You look beautiful tonight,” he says after a few minutes I lift my head to his, my heartbeat zooming up. Did he…did he just call me beautiful? “Thanks,” I breathe. “You look beautiful, too. Handsome. I mean, handsome.” He laughs softly. “Thanks.”
“Yeah.” He has no idea how miserable I was watching him dance with Teagyn. He has no idea how much this moment means to me. He bends close. “Me, too.”
The music eventually turns slow again and Brayden once again wraps his arms around my waist. I press myself to his chest, my cheek to his. And then we sway.
“I am looking at you. I see a smart, beautiful, kind, caring, wonderful girl. A girl who means the world to me. A girl who has captured my heart. A girl whom I never want to let go of.”
He gathers me close to his chest. “I started falling for you when you played tea party and basketball with me and Bailey,” he whispers in my ear. “No, I think it was before that, even. You had such a bright smile that lit up your entire face. And every time you smiled, I felt something. In here.” He touches his heart.
“Want to know a secret?” I ask him when we finally take a break. “You’re the first boy I have ever kissed.” He smiles. “Want to know a secret? You’re the first girl I’ve kissed who actually means something to me.”
“I know I keep telling you this,” he whispers. “But you’re the best thing that could have happened to me. You changed my life, Kara. I love you so much.”
