This factoring process will show that one can win the transcendence with any algebraic number, and so the winning numbers are exactly the algebraic numbers. In particular, one will not be able to win the game with e or π, as these numbers are transcendental. Meanwhile, it is a fun exercise to prove that a number is rational if and only if you can win the game without using the multiply-by-x rule.
