In the Talmud the word ‘kabbalah’ simply means ‘received [doctrine]’ or ‘tradition’–the latter part of the Bible, after the Pentateuch and the oral teaching. However, it gradually came to mean esoteric teaching, enabling the privileged few either to make direct communion with God or to acquire knowledge of God through non-rational means.
