have been no world and therefore no history. God had created many worlds and destroyed them as unsatisfactory. He made the present one for the Torah, and so it gave him pleasure. But if Israel, when offered by him the Torah, had rejected it–and some talmudic scholars thought it nearly had done–then the world would have simply reverted to its previous formless state.
