If the citizens in certain zip codes still insisted on some fiction, the virus would expose the lie, and they would soon find themselves isolated and unwelcome in other parts of the country, where businesses had reopened and a semblance of ordinary daily life had resumed. It wasn’t just the effects of the virus that needed to be mitigated. The effects of the culture did, too.
