Brie called a doctor friend who said, “You know, stopping puberty is going to stop her brain development.” That was enough to prompt Brie to halt all talk of medical transition and begin scrutinizing the information the gender clinicians were doling out. When she realized her daughter seemed to be experiencing more distress as a transgender-identified adolescent than she had before, Brie quit her job and spent a few months traveling with her daughter, to remove her from the social environment in which she’d identified as a boy.
