“Boo.” Hot breath at her ear. She whirled around, brandishing her stake.
“Shh,” he said. “Calm down, woman.”
“While I thoroughly enjoy this us time, you need to calm the fuck down,” he growled, mirth fading from his tone.
It felt… annoyingly nice. His warm body against her colder one.
“No. I’ll bite you. Maybe lick you. Maybe…” He nuzzled into her neck, inhaling deep. “Crimson, you smell so good.”
“What’s so funny?” “You,” he blurted. “You Well-blessed humans from the old world are all the same. Surprising. Funny. Cute.” He booped her nose. She blinked, agape.
“Hi,” he said softly, eyes searching her face. “I’m Indigo. What’s your name?”
Fuck it. This might be his last chance. He kissed her quickly, hotly, and passionately before flashing a grin and torpedoing through the branches, swords first.
There was a reason vampires rarely mated. Males became protective, possessive, and passionate. To a point that defied logic. Even wolf shifters could not compare against a vampire in the throes of his mating hormones, or a female vampire in heat. Some called them rabid. Some called them insatiable. All Indigo knew was that if he gave in to the feelings bubbling inside him, bloodlust would be the least of his worries. He’d never let her go.
He let out a burst of air that turned into a haggard growl of warning. She had no idea the game she played at, or the caged monster she poked.
She belonged to him.
“Unlike the shadow snake which connected our physical sensations, the Well-blessed bond shares our mana and emotions. I can tell you feel guilty about something. Eat. Or there will be consequences.”
“Violet.” His voice deepened, his expression turning serious. “From here on out, it’s always going to be we.”
In the space of a day, Violet had suddenly become the most important thing in Indigo’s life.
“You said I’m not a prisoner.” “You’re not. But you’re mine.”
“Oh, and Violet?” he said, hand on the doorknob. “If you ask me again, I will bite you, and I will make it hurt… but only if it’s for the right reasons.” He would give her whatever she needed, even if it cost him. “And if it’s not?” she asked quietly. “Then I’ll make it feel good.”
Fear lit up their bond. She tried to pull away and shut down, but he applied a steady pressure on her jaw, the kind that said he was in control. Nothing bad would happen to her while he was here. This was a safe place.
“You will eat. You will warm yourself. You will sleep. You will train. You will get strong. And when I get back, if I find out you haven’t been doing these things, then there will be consequences. I don’t know what these will be yet, but I know you can’t make that decision by yourself. Am I wrong?” Defiance flared in her expression, but down the bond he felt an easing of her worry. Just a sliver. A drop. “Do you understand, Violet? Those are the rules.”
“Argh!” she shouted. “You’re infuriating.” “You’re gorgeous.” He rolled their positions until he flattened her with his weight, smiling gleefully at her moxie.
“This isn’t going to be a problem, is it?” she asked. “I thought you were feeling… good. Satisfied. Not all psycho mate.” “Where you are concerned, I will always be your psycho.”
A better plan? Indigo had a better plan—Stop staring at my mate or I gut you. How’s that for a plan?
