Fuck it. This might be his last chance. He kissed her quickly, hotly, and passionately before flashing a grin and torpedoing through the branches, swords first.
But that was the thing about anxiety… it didn’t conform to logic. It itched and scampered beneath the surface, finding ways to break through until even the smallest possibility of her worst fears coming true was amplified.
Violet’s outburst hadn’t just been a victim lashing out at her captor, her words had cut cruelly to the core of his beliefs.
To Indigo, she was the perfect choice for him. Unbending. Resilient. The kind of female who would join him wherever life would take them. The kind who would take him places too.

When he looked down, she was fast asleep. She’d drifted off hearing how valued she was, how wanted, and that made him smile.
Moments like these were worth fighting for.

“I’m going to kill them,” he promised. “Every single one of them.” “There’s only one left alive…” “He’s a dead fae walking.”

“This isn’t going to be a problem, is it?” she asked. “I thought you were feeling… good. Satisfied. Not all psycho mate.” “Where you are concerned, I will always be your psycho.”
She said if I hurt you, she would find a way to kill me. A pause. I believe her.
A conversation from another time. “What is the point?” It is not for us to decide. We are what she made us. “Why do it when it hurt us so?” Because it is our purpose. “Why steal souls and keep them?” It is our food. Our sustenance. We… are nothing alone… but together… we are many. “But it hurts. We don’t want it. We don’t want any of it.” We just want life.
“So if that’s why you brought me here, you can just fuck off.” The queen blinked rapidly. Violet guessed no one had ever told her to fuck off before, but she lifted her chin because the words had felt so good. She could say no. Never again would she be pressured into being someone she wasn’t. She had power over her choices. She was a smart woman. A goddamned smart, mother fucking woman. And she’d said no.
