Philosophers are divided, and have been for some time, concerning the prospect of generalized autonomous AIs (GAAIs), whether in human form or not, who could achieve consciousness. They are nevertheless united in thinking that such consciousness, supposing it possible, is at least a necessary condition of potential personhood.
