“Okay, so you know that scene in Clueless where Tai is crying about Elton, and Cher and Dionne tell her that she’s way too good for him?” Nodding, Melanie blesses herself dramatically. “You know Clueless is my church, Corinne.” “Great, so you know that she says, ‘If I’m too good for him, then how come I’m not with him?’”
Desperate? Possibly. Stalkerish? Also a possibility. But dogged? Hell yes. And if I’m anything, it’s dogged.
For another, he ordered a beer at a wine bar. He may as well have pissed on the Coliseum and gone on a big game hunt in Africa—that’s how abhorrent I think his decision is.
His gaze borders on admiration. “That’s my girl,” he murmurs before he plants a kiss on my lips. “You’ve always been a fast learner.” I kiss him back. “Oh, so I’m your girl now?” “Corinne, you’ve always been my girl,” he replies without hesitation. “It’s just taken you a while to accept it.”
“Well of course I have. I literally had sex with a guy in his car last Monday,” was her response. When I let out a scoff she laughs. “What, bitch? He drove me to Costco. It was the least I could do.”
Gray breaks the kiss and puts a hand on either side of my face. He looks into my eyes. “I missed you. And for a moment there, I thought I’d really screwed this up.” “You had,” I respond. “Truly. I was about to add your email address to every Scientology mailing list in existence. But I believe you.”
This guy. This fucking guy.
“You don’t operate in a world where uncertainty is a factor, do you?” I ask him.
“About time, right?” he asks. I can’t stop myself from letting out a small laugh. I lean up to kiss his lips and I nod in agreement. “About time.”
Applause surrounds us and drinks are raised, but she’s the only thing in the world that I notice. And it has always, always been that way.
