“Come on, love,” he panted. “You can’t—tell me to—” “Come.”
“It’s very late, Danika. You can’t go home on your own.” Laughter chased away the shadows in her chest. “Zaf, it’s barely seven o’clock.” “You’re talking too much.”
“I love you,” he repeated softly. “And it’s not in spite of this or that. It’s not because I don’t see you as you are. It’s not because I want you to be someone else. I just . . . love you.”
“Don’t be irritating, Josephine. I am attempting to prostrate myself before you.”
Zaf thought some more. “Are you going to propose to Kiran?”
Love could hurt so bad, but fuck was it good.
“I . . . may or may not have read a few romance novels in order to research how I might win you back.” “You did what?” he choked out. Then his shock dissolved into laughter. “Ah, but of course you did. Danika fucking Brown.” He made her name sound like a blessing.
“I don’t want presents, you understand.” He believed her. She looked mildly horrified by the idea. “I’m very pleased with dinner and I’m very pleased with you. And maybe anal, since we’re celebrating,” she added thoughtfully.
You make me feel like myself, and you make me feel like I’m enough, and you even make me feel like I would be just fine without you. The thing is, I don’t want to be without you, and so I don’t ever plan on it. We are going to have many more anniversaries, and you will continue to make me dinner, and I will continue to make you smile, and I believe that is what they call—” He arched an eyebrow. “Living happily ever after?” She nodded. “Sounds about right.”
