“You’re coming, too?” “I am,” she replied, eyeing Nikolai. “Someone has to keep my husband in check.” “Truthfully, she’s simply run out of men on this continent to charm,” Nikolai returned, leaning back in his chair and shooting her a smug look.
“Bellezza, you must know how I feel for you.” “I know how your dick feels,” she remarked with a snort. “And believe me, it’s not overly impressive.”
“Very well.” Nikolai drummed a finger on the table. “Tell our allies to go to Nortosce and depose the Alpha of his pack and his head. Spare the innocent.”
An army of possibly psychotic shifters led by my maybe sociopathic father. Freaking awesome.
Besides, apparently threatening me while I’m in Narodnaya means you get turned into an eye-kebab.”
“What happened with Elias?” He gave me the pregnancy scare of a lifetime. “We didn’t have time for many questions before Nikolai tried to kill him with a table,”
The man had someone executed in front of me less than an hour ago. Yeah, the guy was a traitor who was part of a plan to kidnap me, but now I was stuck with the image of a guy with a knife in his eye for the rest of my life.
Try to keep up. Nikolai’s amused voice ghosted through my head before he hurled himself into the impending darkness with a playful growl. My wolf immediately gave chase, and I happily took a backseat as her competitive streak pushed us faster until we were on Nikolai’s heels.
There was a clearing in the middle ringed by trees and sharp slopes of the mountain. In the clearing were wolves. At least four dozen of them. Some were burrowed into the snow together, sleeping. Most were playing, chasing and nipping at each other with high pitched yips and teasing growls.
I just hoped like hell he didn’t disappoint her. It would be awkward as hell to have to dismember my future father-in-law.
Rhodes went to grab what she needed from the refrigerator with a smirk. Glancing around the room, it struck me how normal this had become. Katy handling the twins, Ryder and Dante cuddled together at the end of the island, Rhodes and Larkin making breakfast. This group was almost complete.
“Remy, you’re the best man I know. There’s no one else I trust to lead this pack.”
I just hoped I could be half the Alpha he was. Maybe then we would have a fighting chance.
“Every single heir deferred to you. They looked to you for guidance.” “And now most of them are dead,” I muttered.
“I heard you survived that mess at the Summit,” he added. “Fortunately my heir and I had already left.” I couldn’t hold in the snort. “Yeah, I guess it is pretty fortunate to miss an explosion that you planned.”
“I still don’t know how you can share your girl,” Rhodes admitted. “If Remy touched Lark, I’d rip his arms off.” I narrowed my eyes. “Same, fucker.”
“Tell me you don’t feel bonded to her, even if by nothing but pain.”
“I’m not most girls.” Respect shone in his eyes. “No, you aren’t, little sister.” I groaned, rolling my eyes. “I’m barely your sister.” He wrapped a strong arm around my shoulders, pulling me against his side. “You love it.”
“Why?” His gaze snapped to mine. “Because you are my daughter. These men will fight for me, and I will fight for you. My war is theirs. And your war is mine, little wolf. Never forget that.”
“Bonding wave?” Nikolai pressed, leaning in. “That sounds fun.” Natasha smirked and winked at me. “Mama, please.” Dimitri winced. He rubbed his temple with a groan. Natasha sighed dramatically. “How are you even my child?”
The Conclave usually turns into a freaking orgy because the second gen bonds are so strong.” Natasha grinned. “It is always a fun night.” “Tasha, maybe we can curtail the commentary until a time when our son isn’t ready to crawl under a seat from embarrassment?” Nikolai murmured.
We’re talking a crazy amount of hormones and pheromones and … regular moans.”
He sighed softly, hiding a smile. “They need to bring the stairs over to the door unless you plan on dropping fifty feet to the ground.” Oh. Well, shit. That made sense.
I had watched her break into a run, carefully scrutinizing every step to check for injuries as she got closer. Now that she was in my arms, it was all I could do not to strip her down and inspect every inch of her skin, and not just for injuries.
“All this formality is stifling, Nik.” “Mama,” Dimitri grumbled.
“She’s pretty,” Natasha remarked, almost awed. She glanced back at her husband with a scoff. “Too pretty for you.”
“Thank you,” I started sincerely, “for protecting Skye.” Dimitri nodded with an easy grin and shook my hand. “No problem.” My right hand squeezed his as my left arm swung. My knuckles collided solidly with his jaw, snapping his head back. I let go as he stumbled backwards and went down, hard.
“Take her away from me again and I’ll kill you.” “Noted,” he muttered, rubbing his jaw. He winced as he touched the already swelling area and got back up.
“Stop treating me like I’m made of glass, and fuck me like I belong to you.”
“Fuck,” I hissed, barely resisting the urge to close my eyes. He chuckled. “That’s the idea, baby.”
Skye was ours from the second those mossy green eyes locked on mine. She sealed her fate when she lifted her chin a notch, likely not even aware of the challenge she inadvertently threw off. Or that my wolf fucking loved it.
I’m making a mess of this, aren’t I?” A dimple appeared in Nikolai’s cheek. “You certainly aren’t helping things, love. But keep talking. Maybe you’ll bare all the sordid details of our marriage.” Natasha’s eyes narrowed for a heartbeat. “Sordid my ass. I want a divorce.”
“Please,” Natasha added emphatically, turning to Mom. “Take him off my hands. I don’t want him.” I snorted as Nikolai looked affronted.
“I knew from the second I found out that you existed that you were my world. I fought like hell to keep you, and I was so relieved when you, my beautiful baby girl, came out looking just like your father.”
“What a sweaty-ball licking cuntbag,” Katy hissed, looking as pissed off as I felt.
“I don’t know if you’re worthy of my daughter.” I sucked in a sharp breath, more than ready to tell him off, but Remy simply shook his head and chuckled. “I can assure you that I'm not,” he said evenly. “But she’s mine and I’m hers, so you’ll have to deal with it.”
It was terrifying and humbling, but my wolf easily sifted through those human emotions and pressed her own into my heart. Confidence.
“Just a heads up, but even I can scent the pheromones in the air right now,” Lulu said worriedly. “You might want to either try to wrangle things or resolve yourself to a massive mating orgy outside the tent.”
“We still have Linden Markham here. He’s alive, which means he’s still Alpha of Long Mesa.” “A situation easily remedied,” Nikolai ground out. “We could send his head back to his pathetic little pack in a box.”
Her green eyes narrowed, and she folded her arms under her chest, completely unaware that her defiant pose only served to offer her amazing tits up on a platter.
“Be nice, or I’ll pull your intestines out of your ass and let your sister use them as a jump rope.”
Nikolai finally cleared his throat and turned to me. “So, Alpha, are we still thinking we need to bring him with us? Or will just his head in a box suffice?”
Nikolai bent down into the cooler he had brought and lifted Linden’s head before casually tossing it at Allan like a baseball.
“Well, she had fun being the first person to kill one of your kids.” Remy let a slow smile creep across his lips. Allan’s face twisted. “And I had a blast being the one who killed the second,” Remy added with a wink.
Cassian stepped out from around the corner, the jagged scar running down his face erasing the boy-next-door looks he had used like a weapon. He was thinner now, the angles of his features sharper. He looked like the monster I always knew he was.
“He’s the Alpha?” “Apparently,” Remy replied coolly, not taking his eye off the undead Cassian. Nikolai grinned, spreading his arms wide like he welcomed the news. “Wonderful.” He lunged forward, kicking Allan’s knee with a crack. Allan staggered and went down with a bellow, but Nikolai’s hands were there to cradle his head a brief second before they twisted, wrenching his head to the side.
