I was struck by the truth that real friends, as rare as they were, could be recognized in how they encouraged us—either via words or actions—to be the best versions, the strongest versions of ourselves. And when we couldn’t be strong, they were there to pick us up and hold us together.
He was worthy beyond all others, and it was time that I tracked him down… and made that bastard repair my library. Right after he fucked me silly. No lie, my heart and my vagina fluttered at the very thought.
I didn’t pretend to misunderstand what he was asking. “He never touched me sexually. I didn’t remember you, but I sure as fuck remembered what a piece of shit he was.”
Shadow didn’t like that reminder, his kiss turning harder, and my brain went on a little vacation from thought. “My beast knew you,” he finally said, his voice a husky rumble. “Even if I didn’t remember, my instinct knew you were mine. Nothing in any world would have gotten through to me except you, Sunshine. I need you to know that.”
My plan to grow on him like some sort of exotic fungus was in full swing.
“You’re the match to my soul, Sunshine,” he rumbled through the power surrounding us. “You are my one. The only being I would destroy worlds for, and I’m afraid I did just that.”
“Nothing was the same without you. I didn’t know why, but I knew that I was missing something vital to my survival. I searched, and I destroyed. More than just the Solaris System. I stripped myself bare so I could build myself up again and find the fundamental part of my soul that was missing. Only you weren’t there.”
Our kiss was bittersweet and perfect. A kiss to soothe and heal. A kiss to cleanse our pain from many bitter nights apart. A kiss to break the final dredges of Dannie’s spell. A kiss of love. No matter what my beast might think.
He took two steps across the room, and before I could ask him another question, I was in his arms. “You sleep naked with me, Sunshine,” he said, his voice deeper than usual. “I want to feel every inch of your skin pressed to mine. I want your scent and mine together. I want nothing between us.”
You belong to me, Sunshine.” “Until such a time you say I don’t.” We’d played this game before. Shadow’s biceps tensed on either side of my head, and when he lowered himself down, my breath caught in anticipation. “No, Mera,” he murmured. “There’s no such out available to you any longer. You’re mine. End of story or end of life.”
“I think that’s why I love the stories with villains instead of heroes as the main characters,” I whispered. “Heroes are limited because they always have to do the right thing. But villains aren’t restricted by their moral compasses. They will do literally anything and destroy anyone who tried to hurt those they love. I think, deep down, I’ve always considered myself a villain. In that way.”
Shadow rumbled, sounding pissed off. At first I thought it was my comment about bitching, but then he said, “Mera’s life is the most valuable life in any of the worlds. I will die for her, as will our pack.”
“How is it that you still don’t understand the danger of putting a foreign object in your mouth?” Shadow asked with a shake of his head. “For all you know, the water here could kill you in an instant.” I gawked at him. “You didn’t say anything when I had your dick in my mouth. Where was your concern then?”
“Mera was who you lost,” Shadow said bluntly. “We all lost her, and apparently, she’s the humanity that holds us all together.”
“Mera is hoping that she’ll release it on her own,” Shadow added, “always trying to save us, even when we’re barely redeemable.”
“You were made for me,” he said in his deep brogue. “There’s no other, Sunshine. Not now, not ever.” His words were a love poem, delivered Shadow-style, and it made me love him even more. If that were possible. “True mates,” I whispered, my throat tight with both emotions and an impending orgasm. “Through this world and the next. For eternity.”
we will have all the eternities together, Sunshine. You’re mine, for now and always.”

Unfortunately, the bastard doesn’t eat.” “Oh, I eat,” Shadow replied seriously. “My favorite meal is right here in this room.” It took me a second. An embarrassingly long second. “That shade of red is nice on her,” Len said. “Matches her hair.”
the real truth is that I go where you go, Sunshine. Right or wrong, you and I exist together… or we don’t exist at all.”
Shadow spoke love without saying the words better than any being I knew.
