Shadow had always been possessive, but it used to be in the way of an object he didn’t want others to play with. Now it was the possessiveness of a shifter with his true mate. The sort that spoke of a deep-seated need to protect his heart and soul to the bitter end, destroying any who got in the way.
“Firstly, I will never be a bug,” he said seriously, “and secondly, we will have all the eternities together, Sunshine. You’re mine, for now and always.” The always part was a nice addition to his growled statement.
“Thank you,” I whispered, turning my head to meet his gaze. “I see what you do. I appreciate it. I appreciate you.” For a split second, he looked completely taken aback. Not just taken aback, but… lost. The Shadow Beast had no idea how to handle gratitude.
“There’s nothing I won’t do to make you happy, Sunshine,” he told me, his eyes holding flickers of fire. “You only have to ask.”
Her words hurt. She knew how to use them as weapons, hitting at my soft, vulnerable belly. But there was one truth she couldn’t take from me: Shadow Beast was my true mate, and he had not rejected our bond. He’d fought for it.
I scoffed. “You’re not terrified of anything, Shadow Beast.” He stopped me suddenly, wrapping his arms around me as he held on with a desperation he rarely showed in public. “I almost lost you. The way that felt, the choices I made… The world would not survive it again. I would not survive it.” I held on with everything I had, holding his broken pieces together. “This helps,” he whispered into my hair. “It really helps.” “Then I will hold you forever,” I declared.
