I wasn’t so convinced that fatigue from looking for a wife was a valid reason for depression,

I nodded, making appropriate noises, feeling that my brain was slowly festering.

What if its recipient wasn’t at all bothered about dying or being alone? It was branded all over with the value system of its author. You could practically hear them shriek: I’D RATHER DIE THAN DIE ALONE!!!
