young Latinos in East Los Angeles: the distinctive “lowrider.” This custom style is similar to that for other hot rods and was developed concurrently, in the 1940s and ’50s, though as its name implies, a lowrider is dropped down closer to the ground, so that its running boards almost scrape the pavement. In its early years, it differed from the hot rod also in its make; rather than historic Fords, big new Chevrolets were preferred.
