Time changes with torment. It stretches on, lengthening seconds, extending minutes. I’ve learned that pain and fear have a way of prolonging. And as if that weren’t cruel enough, our minds make sure we relive those moments again and again and again, long after they’ve passed. What a bastard, time is.
“I look forward to the attempt.”
“Oh, Goldfinch. You think I’m a monster now, but you haven’t seen anything yet.”
yapping
“Ha! See how fast she ate that? Couldn’t get enough. You all would do well to take some lessons from her.”
“I think these men said something about wanting lessons.” “I heard that too, Commander,” Osrik replies, a wicked smirk tugging at his lips.
“For the record, I get pissed off when I look at you, too,” I reply.
“We’re all captives of something, even things we don’t want to admit to.”
“I hope you burn so bright that you scorch your Golden King down to ash.”
“Thanks for thinking you were protecting me...but can you not do that again? They’re gonna give me shit for this for weeks.” “Umm, yes. Sorry.”
Did I think he was beautiful before? I take it all back. He’s an ugly bastard.
This smile is soft. It’s proud. “There it is, Goldfinch,” he purrs, and that dark caress is back in his voice. “You’ve finally found your fight.”
“Sometimes,” he murmurs, “things need first to be ruined in order to then be remade.”
“Your Majesty, I hope I wasn’t interrupting.” “Not yet,” Jeo says with a salacious wink.
She’s gone. She’s finally gone.
It felt like deep-seated want.
Warrior. Yes, I think I would like to be that.
“Kindness shouldn’t have to be earned. It should be freely given.” Keg laughs softly. “My ma used to say something like that,” he replies, looking over at me. “And you know what?” “What?” “She was a damn smart woman.”
“Who knows? That’s up to the kings. I’m just here for the wine.”
“No, Auren. You’re the one that needs to burn. You need to spark to life and fight. Stop letting him dull you, stop letting the whole fucking world trample you,” he shouts, making me flinch from the vehement demand. “If you tried, you could shine brighter than the fucking sun. Instead, you’ve chosen to sit back and wither.”
“Commander, I must insist that you don’t touch King Midas’s favored.” “I must insist that you shut the fuck up,” Osrik drawls.
Foolish, ungrateful lot. How dare they snub their true queen!
spent the last hour handing all of that out, and now, these ungrateful rats think that they can rebel against me?”
I’ve been bending over backwards for so long that I forgot I even had a spine.
“It’s a shame, because I have a list of things I need you to make gold for me, but no matter. I can wait a bit, and in the meantime, you can regain your strength.”
“If you walk out now, I’m done. I will never forgive you. For any of it.”
“I love you, but I don’t need your forgiveness, Precious. I just need your power.”
“Did you kill them?” I ask through labored breaths. He gives me a shrug of his proud, unbothered shoulder. “They were in my way.”
