Gold may gleam, but it doesn’t stand the test of time. It wears down, loses its luster, becomes nothing but a needy, malleable surface with no durability.
I’ve worn a crown my entire life, but I’m finally going to wield it.
I don’t know if the bones in my body are as gold as the rest of me, but for my sake, I hope they are. I hope my spine is gilded, because I’m going to need a strong backbone if I want to survive.
Time changes with torment. It stretches on, lengthening seconds, extending minutes. I’ve learned that pain and fear have a way of prolonging. And as if that weren’t cruel enough, our minds make sure we relive those moments again and again and again, long after they’ve passed. What a bastard, time is.
no one really saw me. If they did, they’d know I’m just a girl with jagged rips and pitted holes inside of her, with golden skin hiding a broken heart.
The commander’s eyes narrow at the sound, as if it personally offends him. “You’re hungry.”
“Goldfinch has some bite to her beak,”
“You seem to be an intelligent female, so I shouldn’t need to tell you that you can’t leave. You’d freeze to death out here on your own, and I’d find you anyway.”
“You care for your King Captor.”
“The goldfinch likes her cage. What a shame.”
Great. I had to be discovered by this big bastard? Honestly, I don’t know what I did to piss off the goddesses so much.
They think I’ll buckle, but they’ll soon realize I’m not that kind of saddle.
“If you insist on lying, at least be better at it.”
“I have a feeling you’ll be changing your mind very soon, Goldfinch.”
“Has no one ever talked openly with you, Auren?”
“I think you’ve had enough orders, Goldfinch,”
How is it that this male can strip me down to my thinnest layers, no matter how thick I try to build my walls?
The problem with truths is that they’re like spices. Add a little, and it can enrich things, let you experience more layers. But if you pour out too much, it becomes unpalatable.
The moment Commander Rip stepped onto that pirate ship and into my life, my world tilted on its axis. Every time we interact, that axis dips just a little bit more.
“We’re all captives of something, even things we don’t want to admit to.”
our plated prisoner.”
Gildy Locks.
This male makes my headache so much worse.
“I don’t think I need to do any of that right now, Goldfinch,”
I hate him in this moment more than all the rest combined.
“Your anger is misplaced, but I like it,” he says with a feral grin, sharp canines gleaming. “Every time you let it leak out just a little bit more, I can see you better, Goldfinch.”
“I can’t wait to see the rest of you. When you let it go, when you finally let that out, your fury is going to light up the spirit you’ve shadowed.”
“I hope you burn so bright that you scorch your Golden King down to ash.”
You forget, I know what you are. You’re so much more than what you let yourself be.”
Great Divine, where’s a hole in the ground when you need it?
“The commander is always serious, love,” Judd cuts in. “It’s one of his worst qualities.”
“Hate can be a very powerful emotion when fighting. Just make sure to use it to your advantage,”
“Because those soldiers were meant to serve as your protection, and they failed,” he says evenly, all amusement gone from his expression, the shadows seeming suddenly darker over his face. “They don’t deserve for you to visit them.”
Why is it that he can undress, and yet, it makes me feel vulnerable?
“You don’t like to be touched. I don’t seem to mind so much.”
Did I think he was beautiful before? I take it all back. He’s an ugly bastard.
“There it is, Goldfinch,” he purrs, and that dark caress is back in his voice. “You’ve finally found your fight.”
“You’re ruining me,”
“Sometimes,” he murmurs, “things need first to be ruined in order to then be remade.”
Don’t lie down to make it easier for the world to keep you under its thumb. Own your shit and choose yourself.”
“Kindness shouldn’t have to be earned. It should be freely given.” Keg laughs softly. “My ma used to say something like that,” he replies, looking over at me. “And you know what?” “What?” “She was a damn smart woman.”
“Time to go, Goldfinch.” My heart squeezes from the nickname as I get to my feet. I’m going to miss this, when I’m back with Midas. I’m going to miss him.
“You don’t have to go back. I could make it so that you could stay.”
You need to spark to life and fight. Stop letting him dull you, stop letting the whole fucking world trample you,”
“If you tried, you could shine brighter than the fucking sun. Instead, you’ve chosen to sit back and wither.”
I hate the power plays of kings.
“I must insist that you shut the fuck up,” Osrik drawls.
This was temporary for her, when it never is for me.
“I always trust you. I always listen to you. Just this once, can’t you listen to me?”
“I’m finally starting to say what I think, and I’m not going to lie down again to make it easier for you to keep me beneath your thumb.”
