“Quentin’s my homie. I wouldn’t do him like that.”
“Nah, I wouldn’t do that to my boy.”
Maybe you’re framing me, or maybe your mom, I wish I could say.
For some reason, it’s getting easier to lie about this.
What could Wade be saying to him, and why couldn’t he say it in front of me?
“I guess when you spend enough time around a person, you eventually see their true colors.”
“Your first boyfriend,” she says, sounding more upbeat. “I can’t wait to meet him.” “You’re going to love him.”
“Of course I will. He sounds really wonderful. . . .”
I didn’t want to be thought of as a sister or even just a friend -- not with Quentin. I had wanted us to be more. I wanted him to choose me over Bellany. Why didn’t he choose me, that question bothered me. Maybe the answer was that I never pursued him like Bellany did. But I wasn’t as bold and confident as she was. I was too afraid of rejection.
He’s one of the few people I trusted enough to tell.
