“Yeah...I think it did,” he said, his faith in my abilities clear in his expression. “We don’t know everything Phoenixes can do, and you have surprised me so many times that I’m certain you’ll keep doing so. So yes, Blue, if you cannot feel it and there is no mark, then surely, you’re no longer cursed.”
“You snuggle with Darcy and Darius all the time. But where’s my snuggles, Lance? Where’s. My. Snuggles?” “You’re fucking insane,” I hissed, and he let out a whimper, stepping toward me with his eyes going all large and dog like. As if that would ever work on me.
Everyone knew the rumours about the apparent accident that had seen Lionel’s older brother Radcliff into an early grave, and there had long since been suspicions that Lionel was the one who was truly responsible for killing his brother off so that he could take his place without ever having to face him like Fae.
She’d knitted me the hat I wore now which connected me to the web of souls and had added extra protective spells which helped keep the shadows from crawling too deep into my mind. It was the only thing that made me feel like myself, so I rarely took it off. When I did, I could hear the Shadow Princess whispering in my head and I was afraid of how easy it was to fall under her command.
But yes, I knew what he was saying and yes, they absolutely needed further education to rule this kingdom properly, but it seemed to me that if the Heirs just found a way to reform the Celestial Council as it was intended, supporting the monarchy instead of resisting it, then maybe they could find a way to make it work that would be better for everyone.
“Ohmagod,” Darcy’s voice carried to me, but I couldn’t quite stir out of sleep to find her. “This is too cute.” “Shh, you’ll wake them and I need to get a photo so that I can mock them tirelessly with it,” Tory whispered. “They’re cuddling,” Darcy whisper-squealed and Tory shushed her again but started suppressing a laugh. “It’s called a man hug,” Darius said, his voice gruff from sleep and I cracked my eyes open, finding we’d shifted close together and were tangled in a ridiculous cuddle. “I guess old habits die hard,” I tried.
“Which is why we’ll make such good friends when you stop holding onto these silly grudges. You know what people say about grudges? It’s like taking killblaze and expecting your enemy to get high and kill themselves. But I’m never going to get high and kill myself, Lance. I’m going to be here always, as your friend. Just give into it, bro. It’s inevitable. Like you and Darcy were inevitable.” “That’s kinda cute,” Darcy said, looking to me with her eyelashes fluttering. “No.” I pointed at her. “Don’t you fall for that shit. He acts like he’s a puppy when he wants something, but he’s still the

“Ooh, so shiny,” she breathed, leaning down to pick up a fat diamond as Darius let out a growl of possessiveness, rushing forward to gather up some of the others as he knelt in the snow. “Those are not yours, Darius.” Tory grabbed them from him, but he had that wild glint in his eyes which he always got around treasure, trying to prise them back out of her fingers. “I’ll look after them,” he said firmly. “Give them to me.”
I’d never realised my mom had an interest in cooking, but she’d been throwing herself into it wholeheartedly since we’d been here, helping to make all of the meals for the rebels while Hamish hung around her, murmuring sweet praises and stealing kisses from her whenever he thought no one was paying attention.
It had been eight weeks already, but it didn’t feel like that. It felt like a blink of an eye and barely a taste of everything I’d always dreamed I might be able to claim for myself. A year was never going to be enough, but now I could see that it was going to be so brief that it broke me.
It was like she’d been bursting with a love that had been all trapped and tied up inside her for so long that now that it was free, she couldn’t help but dole it out to everyone as often as she could. And though I found it hard to express, I freaking loved her playing mom with me. She’d even styled my hair for me a couple of times and it had made my heart feel all light and fluttery even though I hadn’t known how to tell her that. But I kinda got the feeling she knew, because she’d been missing that kind of affection for so long herself that she just recognised it easily in others.
“Lavinia gifted my father a shadow hand to replace the one you took from him,” Darius replied darkly and I growled angrily at that revelation. “Oh, fuck him,” I snapped angrily. “He’s such a fucking dick. Why couldn’t he just be off crying over his lost hand and feeling sorry for himself in a hole somewhere? I bet he was so fucking smug about it too.”
“Yup,” I said with a nod. “The whole thing. Top to bottom, front and back, as glittery and shiny as you can make it.” He scrubbed a hand over the stubble on his jaw, then took out the large needle from the box. “Well it’s gonna hurt like a motherfucker.” “Can’t you heal it as you do it?” I whinnied in protest. “Nah, not my style. I’ll heal it after.” He smirked cruelly, shoving my legs aside as he sat beside me on the couch and roughly took hold of my cock, making me neigh in alarm. “Ready? On three.”
“By the light of an unholy moon!” Geraldine cried, shielding her eyes. “What a time to unveil your Long Sherman!” “Xavier,” Darius hissed. “Cover the fuck up.” “Here, baby boy.” Mom grabbed some sweatpants from the bed, tossing them to me and I scrambled into them, nearly falling on my ass as everyone looked at me and my cheeks burned as hot as the sun.
“A Ron Johnson or four between the bedsheets is all well and good for pickling your baguette, but when it comes to matters of the heart, a platoon of Long Shermans would never be satisfactory. So do Tyler and Xavier rock your underboats as well as showering your cockles in fresh whelks? Do they make your Lady Petunia do the ding-dang-tango and button your damsen?”
“Promise me you’ll make sure your sister behaves, Blue,” Orion muttered to Darcy as I closed in on them. “Just do what Darius says and stay safe while we’re out there.” “Don’t worry,” Darcy agreed easily, glancing at me and twinunicating the fact that neither of us would be blindly taking orders from my boyfriend tonight.
I don’t like that they are acting like they know what they’re doing without the guys. Let’s be real.
For a heartbeat the fire along my wings flickered out and my breath snagged as I was almost sure my wings were about to fall away, panic crashing through my chest. They reignited in the next moment and I glanced at Tory ahead of me, glad she hadn’t noticed as I steadied my thrashing heartbeat and kept flying.
