“You snuggle with Darcy and Darius all the time. But where’s my snuggles, Lance? Where’s. My. Snuggles?” “You’re fucking insane,” I hissed,
“He’s been with Tory all night,” he said. “All night?” I barked, stepping back. “Why didn’t you come to me sooner?” “Trust me, you did not want to go and interrupt them. I had to keep myself busy all night just so I wasn’t plagued by visions of my sister being railed by a fucking Acrux.” “By the moon, why would the stars show you that?” I grimaced. “Because they’re assholes who have a sick sense of humour, Orio.
She rose from her seat, but I shook my head minutely, not wanting her to have to be seen with some Power Shamed Fae. It was making my blood chill. My life was wrecked beyond repair. I would never be seen as an equal in society ever again.
I didn’t know what we were without the bond, we’d been friends before it, but we’d changed so much over the years since then, what if we weren’t as close anymore? What if this broke us? I forced those fears from my head, shooting forward with a burst of speed and punching him in the gut.
So long as she becomes the queen she is destined to be, it will be worth it.
“You’re too hard on yourself,” Gabriel growled, moving toward me, and giving me a firm look. “I didn’t say anything.” I folded my arms, hitching on my favourite give-no-fucks expression and he clucked his tongue at me like a mother hen. “It’s your aura. I can read you like a book,” he said sternly. “But I can see you’re not in the mood to talk about it, so why don’t you go and do what you were planning to instead?”
I frowned. “I was planning something?” He sighed like seeing everyone’s futures was exhausting sometimes. “The Zodiac Guild elixir.” “Right, yeah. I’m gonna check the stores.”
“How did Darius do this?” I asked, stumped as to how he’d pulled this off. “Honestly? I’m unsure. I cannot see the stars’ decisions, so I don’t know what conversation he had with them, and he wasn’t forthcoming when he emerged from the chamber where he made the deal. All he wanted was to reunite with all of you, so we made our way here.”
“What did you call him?” Darcy’s voice made my heart jerk in my chest and I turned, finding her striding out of the farmhouse, her blue hair fluttering behind her and flames blazing in her eyes. Eyes which were locked on the piece of shit at my feet. “M-my lady Gwendalina,” Jim stammered, bowing his head like the dog he was. “I’m sure you’re quite uncomfortable being in the presence of your abuser. We can remove him from The Burrows. It’s no bother at all.” “I asked you a question,” she growled, glaring down her nose at him and I swear I got a semi for her right there and then. “I called him

“Well, who puts a load of shingle at the bottom of a freaking mountain?” she scoffed. “Let’s blame the stars.” I smirked and a smile pulled at her mouth as she nodded.
“I bet it’s right at the top,” Darcy laughed, looking out over the incredible view as we crested a high ridge. “Well at least I’ll get to spend the whole day on this mountain with you,” I murmured. “What?” she called back,
embracing my inner Fae. We were born for challenges and the thrill of a battle, and I’d face our enemies now as surely as we’d faced them in that arena. Nothing would ever be as terrifying as that, kneeling on the ground certain I was going to watch the man I loved die. So I could take on any opponent now, I knew it in my bones. Maybe even Lionel fucking Acrux if he decided to show up at my door.
“How many times do I have to tell you I don’t need protecting?” I hissed. “And how many times do I have to tell you, that I will protect you regardless?” he tossed back
“You’re hurt.” He reached out to heal me, but I slapped his hand away. “Why are you so angry with me?” he demanded and a dam of emotion shattered in my chest. “I’m angry because I’m scared,” I admitted in a rush of words. “Because if you keep trying to save me, maybe one day you’ll put yourself between me and death and it will claim you from me.” Terror coated the admission of my worst fear. “Or maybe you’ll end up in Darkmore again because you make choices for us without consulting me and I’ll lose you all over again.” “That’s love, Blue,” he said in earnest, capturing my wrists as I went to

“Because you’ve never let anyone love you but your sister. You don’t trust the world and you have damn good reason for that, but I’m not your enemy. I know I’ve hurt you, but I did it because I love you in a way that’s bigger than every galaxy in this universe. I was miserable before you showed up in my life, and now you’ve awoken a man in me who I actually fucking like, and I don’t wanna lose him almost as much as I don’t wanna lose you. So yeah, I’m going to put myself between you and death at every chance I get, and maybe that scares you, but it doesn’t scare me, Blue.
“I can’t watch you die,” I said, my voice cracking and giving away my terror over that possibility. “I won’t survive it, Lance. Swear to me you won’t die.”
He sucked away the last of his blood on my lips and I figured going without him for so long had just made me a little feral. Totally normal to savage your super-hot Vampire ex-boyfriend, right? Right.
“Have me,” I begged. “I was yours the first time you called me Blue.”
“I’ve gone easy on you, Blue,” he said, his hand moving down to stroke the stinging mark he’d left on my ass, but he made no move to heal it. “But I’ve seen you blossom into the strongest Fae I know right before my eyes. And I know you like this.” He spanked me again, even harder than before, but this time clapping the back of my thigh and making something between a cry and moan leave
“You clearly didn’t pay enough attention in that lesson, Miss Vega,” he joked. “What do you mean?” I looked at him with a frown. “Vampire speed,” he said. “I can move us as fast as the fucking wind. No one will see us.”
“Are we…back together, Blue?” Orion asked after a while, making my heart squeeze with a thousand good feelings. “I don’t think we were ever really apart, Lance,” I whispered and I turned my head to look at him, finding some hesitation in his eyes.
In fact, it wasn’t just a rebellion. With us and the Vegas set against him, I could only conclude that what we’d all done on Christmas Day was declare civil war within Solaria and from now until the end of this we would be fighting to win.
It is said that Gwendalina (Darcy) Vega has long since been using manipulation of the mind to convince those closest to her to believe in the ravens she falsely claims to see. Once convinced of the existence of such ravens, she uses that illusion to feed lies and delusions to those she seeks to control - just as the Phoenixes of old did a thousand years ago.
“My dad wouldn’t back Ellis for my position,” he said. “Not unless he was forced to. He’s always been firm in his support for me, and she’s only got one fucking Element! Besides, she could no sooner take me down than fly herself to the fucking moon.” “Yeah, this reeks of that asshole with the crown,” I agreed on a growl. “We need to talk to the others. Seth is-” “Seth is what?” Seth asked as he appeared, sticking his head around the door and grinning in at us. “Show him,” I grunted, shoving myself out of bed and hunting for some clothes.
“Because they’re playing along. I know my mom and she would never back Hadley over me unless he took me on and won. That’s what true Fae do. They claim their fucking power, and there is no way in hell that she would just switch her preference to him unless she knew it was the only way that she could protect our family.” “He’s right,” Max agreed. “Think about it.
Tory was nestled into the crook of Darius’s arm, her eyes closed and breathing heavy as he trailed his fingertips along her spine, the sheets tugged over them enough to cover most of her body from us. His gaze snapped to us, but in the brief moment before that, all I’d seen in his expression was this, deep, fulfilled kind of contentment as he’d been watching her, and it made the knot in my chest loosen to know that at least one good thing had come from this nightmare.
depths of his eyes in a clear warning. “Do the assholes just want him, or do I have to drag my ass out of bed too?” she asked us, scrubbing some sleep from one eye with a fist and yawning. “Just the Dragon thanks, sweetheart,” I confirmed and she nodded, grabbing a pillow and tugging it over her face in a clear dismissal. “And this one claimed she didn’t wanna be a princess,” Seth scoffed,
“I knew you couldn’t cope without home comforts,” I teased him and he shoved me back. “Says the dude who has literally fully furnished his underground cave to make it look like it belongs in a five star hotel,” Seth mocked. “Well, no one said being a rebel had to mean living in squalor,” I tossed back, shoving him again, but before we could fall into a full blown tussle, Max pushed us apart and sat down between us. “Stop flirting with each other and focus on the problem here,” he snapped,
“Hold the fuck up,” Seth said, shoving himself forward in his seat as I blanched at that suggestion. “Are you telling me that the food we’ve been eating is not only of a questionable quality but that there is no service here either?” “No, asshole. They’re rebels living in a fucking cave. There isn’t any catering service, just like there’s no laundry service or cleaning service or-” “Are you telling me I’m supposed to just wear dirty clothes for however the fuck long I’m down here?” I interrupted,
“Well, I’ll wash your clothes if you’ll make my room all fancy with earth magic like you did with yours,” Max offered and I nodded in agreement. “Done.” “You guys are fucking princesses,” Darius said,
he looked around the room like he was hunting for someone. Probably Grus. Man had it bad.
“I can meet with my mom,” I said. “We have a plan in place for anything going to hell like this. There’s a place where I can go and summon her. She left a crystal there which is linked to the stone in her wedding ring. No one knows about it besides me and her, so I know it’ll be safe.” “Shit. Why didn’t my dad think of something like that?” Max asked. “Or my mom,” Seth added with a huff.
"Though if Lionel wants to bump off my evil stepmother I won’t be complaining,” Max added, making me smirk.
“Stop, Geraldine,” Tory begged, slipping through the crowd with her sister. “I’ll go on a fucking hunger strike if I’m forced to endure this kind of welcome every time I come looking for food.” “You heard my lady!” Geraldine roared. “Avert your gazes and return to your business!” Tory cringed and Darcy blushed furiously as they made it to the table and everyone in the room pointedly looked anywhere but at them.
“I want him here,” Darcy said firmly. “He’s my boyfriend.” Hamish paled at that and Seth bounced up and down in his seat as Tory grinned at them.
“This is the best I could manage,” Darius said, dropping the plate of toast down on the table before us and making Seth gasp in horror. “Why is there only butter on it?” I asked. “And why isn’t the butter all the way to the edges?” Seth added. “Do I smell burning?” Max asked, picking up a slice and turning it over to reveal the black underside. “I’ve never tried to make toast with my magic before, alright?” Darius grumbled. “Would you rather I’d just brought you uncooked bread?” “Than this horror show?” Seth said, clutching his imaginary pearls. “Yes I would.”
“Well technically I have given a Vega a load of-” I began but Darius cut me off with a snarl. “Do not finish that sentence, Caleb,” he barked. “Or I swear to fuck, I’ll cut your dick off and toss it in the tray with those chipolatas over there.”
bound in brown leather and I flipped it open, frowning at the empty pages. “It’s linked to my scribing stone. Whatever I write on my stone will disappear from my end and reappear in this. We will pass you whatever information we can.”
“But what if he uses a Cyclops on you or Dark Coerces you or something even more powerful?” I hissed, clutching her hand like she might be about to leave me already. “I’m not afraid of Lionel Acrux,” she scoffed. “He may have cheated his way into gaining command over the shadows, but he isn’t any more powerful than me. In fact, he’s barely an echo of the man his brother would have been if he’d come into his power instead of dying the way he did.”
Everyone knew the rumours about the apparent accident that had seen Lionel’s older brother Radcliff into an early grave, and there had long since been suspicions that Lionel was the one who was truly responsible for killing his brother off so that he could take his place without ever having to face him like Fae.
Now unless you want them all to think I’m taking the world’s longest shit, I need to go.” I breathed a laugh and let her pull me into a tight embrace once more.
“Keep the gemstone with you. Activate it if you get any information which leads you to believe my life is in danger or if Antonia or Tiberius’ lives are at risk then activate it to warn me of that too. Just press your power into it once if it’s my life that is in danger, twice in a row if it’s Antonia’s family and three times for Tiberius. If you do it four times then we will know that we all need to run. I’ll make sure we have plans in place if it comes to that.”
Blood and gore filled the space above our heads and the wide open mouth of a Fae caught in an endless scream stared down at us from above. “Holy fuck, what the hell did that?” I swore,
I waved to her and she jogged over, her hand locked in Darius’s as she pulled him along, his black and gold swim shorts the only thing he wore and I couldn’t help but smirk at their matching tattoos. My sister had gone freaking soft on that Dragon even if she had chosen to display it in a badass way instead of a soppy one. Orion shifted beneath me as Tory dropped down onto the lounger beside ours and Darius looked to him as he remained standing. “Hey, brother,” he said,
“Can we help?” I asked, stepping toward him. “No, my lady Darcy,” he said. “Please return to your room. We will find the culprit swiftly.” “You don’t think it’s to do with Lionel?” Tory asked, her right hand tightening into a fist as Catalina’s spine straightened at his name. “As of yet, there is no sign of further attack,” Hamish said. “But we will be most vigilant, of course.”
“If it is, I’ll take his other fucking hand,” she growled and the strength in her voice brought a smile to my lips. “We’ll cut his legs off too and throw him in a river to drown,” I agreed as we parted.
“Just tell him the truth, Seth.” He frowned, twiddling his thumbs. “What if you ask him if he likes me while I hide under a barrel nearby? And then if he says he’s not into me, I can jump out and say it’s a prank.”
