“Turns out, I enjoy the company of your shadow more than any other,” he said in a low voice that set my pulse racing. “So go ahead and walk away from me, Blue, but I’ll be right behind you.”
That when we stood before each other and he saw a queen, I saw a king staring back at me.
“Goodnight, Lance,” I said breathlessly and he pressed his lips to the soft place behind my ear as his fingers ran over the bite to heal it. “Goodnight, Blue.” “Goodnight, roomies,” Seth whispered.
“Is it totally conceited of me to hope you might be waiting for me?” Darius’s voice called out from the dark and my eyes fluttered open. “Yeah,” I agreed on a breath as I drank in the sight of him standing before me in the half unbuttoned black shirt and smart trousers he’d worn to marry Mildred, my heart racing with the speed of a stallion and my throat thickening as I took in the very real man who was somehow standing a little way down the hill before me. “But I think I’ve always been waiting for you, so maybe you’re right.”
“I’m yours, Roxy,” he growled against my lips. “For every single second I have in this world, I’m all yours. And after that I’ll still be yours, wherever I end up after I’m gone, I’ll belong right here with you.”
“Oh. And just in case it wasn’t clear, baby, I’m not going to be anyone’s but yours. So maybe you and me should get hitched and I can show you what a real wedding night looks like?”
“We can see if we can go a week without beating the crap out of each other and think about marriage in like twenty years or something?”
“You are better than him, Darius. And you might be a monster, but you’re my monster now and I want you just the way you are.”
“You snuggle with Darcy and Darius all the time. But where’s my snuggles, Lance? Where’s. My. Snuggles?”
“Have me,” I begged. “I was yours the first time you called me Blue.”
“This is the best I could manage,” Darius said, dropping the plate of toast down on the table before us and making Seth gasp in horror. “Why is there only butter on it?” I asked. “And why isn’t the butter all the way to the edges?” Seth added. “Do I smell burning?” Max asked, picking up a slice and turning it over to reveal the black underside. “I’ve never tried to make toast with my magic before, alright?” Darius grumbled. “Would you rather I’d just brought you uncooked bread?” “Than this horror show?” Seth said, clutching his imaginary pearls. “Yes I would.”
“How can we tell a Nymph from a Fae when they aren’t shifted?” Max asked, narrowing his eyes at everyone around us like they could all be our enemies in disguise. “You can’t,” Orion said simply. “I totally can,” Darius said cockily. “It’s in their eyes.” “Bullshit, you always think that, but it isn’t true,” Orion tossed back. “How’d you miss Diego if you can tell the difference?” “I always knew there was something off with that hat kid,” Darius said with a shrug.
“The hat kid’s name was Diego? I swear it was Darnell,” Darius murmured
“I’m no good with names,” Seth said innocently. “Last night you listed every single one of the team players in the entire Solarian Pitball League and their star signs,” Max reminded him.
Seth started laughing too which made it immediately not funny anymore
They’d just made her harder, stronger and more like the Fae queen she’d been born to be.
“Really?” I asked as I clutched his arm, squeezing tight as the panic of losing him ebbed away. I wouldn’t survive that. I needed my brother more than anything. He was my rock.
“He’s gonna turn into a kid when he sees those. I bet you fifty auras he says ‘oh my stars!’ like a boy on Christmas morning.”
“Oh my stars,” he gasped, grabbing the bag from me and rifling through the books with a youthful smile on his face.
but I couldn’t help but appreciate the mental picture of Maxy boy pounding sweet Justin’s adoring little woodlouse face into the floor.
I’d had my eyes trained on a chocolate bar sticking out of Tory Vega’s pocket. A chocolate bar that was now stashed under my pillow. It was cute how she kept playing this snack hunt game with me. Sometimes she hid the snacks so well, it was almost like she didn’t want me to find them. But I always did.
I wheeled around, casting a silencing bubble and leaping back onto the bed as Orion chugged more of the bourbon. It was almost like he wanted to be drunk to endure my company, but it couldn’t be that. I was a delight.
“Says the girl who kisses Darius like she’s trying to eat his whole face,” I tossed at her. “I do not,” she protested as Darius boomed a laugh.
“No. Not like you. It was you. Even before I ever laid eyes on you, it was you, Roxy. Only ever you.”
“There’s a rift between the Fae and Shadow Realms which is feeding Lavinia power and the Nymphs have been helping her bolster it with those dark artifacts,”
“Hell yeah we can,” Seth agreed. “We’re the Phoen Dream, Bitchy Flame Eyes, Wolfman, Bitey C, Fish Fury, Dragzilla, Professor Shame and Batty Betty.”
Fly fast and true, sweet girl. Secrets wait beneath the ground, search fearlessly and they shall be found. I arched a brow at what I had to assume was some kind of prophecy, holding my note out for Darcy to read as she showed me hers. When darkness steps closer, lean into the light. The strongest of weapons is forged in the flame, hold your breath and fight through the pain.
“I know,” he said, his voice rough with grit. “Because I’m not going to let them take you from me, Blue, even if they come down from the heavens themselves to try and rip you from my arms. I am not named after the hunter constellation for no reason. I will make the stars my prey if they set you in their sights, and so help me, I will carve every one of them out of their seats in the sky and watch them fall.”
“I call that worshipping my goddess. I call it making love to the most beautiful woman in all of Solaria, I call it penance for all the bad things I’ve done to you and the least I can offer in retribution for the harm I caused you. But most of all, I call it loving you with the intensity of the sun and the devotion of the moon because you are my end, baby. The only dream I never dared to have for myself. Yet here you are, within reach at all times. And you’d better believe I can’t resist you now that I have you. I plan on marking every inch of your flesh so thoroughly with the memory of my

“Because a palace waiting for us isn’t at all creepy or concerning,” I muttered, following as he walked on. “Inanimate objects just hang around and wait for us now.”
“It’s time for you to learn the path of the flames.”
“Keep the broken promise.”
“What’s your Order, Jacob?” Darius demanded. “C-cerberus,” he stuttered, starting to sense we were the danger in the room. “And my name is Justin.
“But I think we have enough evidence to put you down anyway, Jeremy,” Darius added
“It’s only fair, Joseph,” Darius agreed,
“Months?” Darius choked out. “You’re joking,” he snapped. “Tell me you’re joking.”
“I’m gonna be diseased. I’ll get Faeitis. Faeiphylis. Fucking pink eye,”
“I think you could bottle it as a scent actually, it’s kind of alluring. You could call it eau de toi-regret.” “Thanks,” I said dryly. “I’ll do that once I’ve finished setting up my own failed dreams clothing line.”
Tory will be back before you know it and you’ll be able to look forward to a future where you create mini Dragons and Phoenixes to chase around after each other in a kingdom which thrives in peace.”
This version of me was hard and cold at times, but she was the one who broke through all of that. She was my sunshine after an eternal winter,
“I love you guys,” Seth said dreamily. “Even you, Lance. I know that your snappy snaps are only ever meant with love.” “They’re not,” Orion mumbled.
