She wiped the sweat off her forehead with her sleeve. A nice, air-conditioned Uber.
It made sense the more she thought about it, considering the trees had the most access to sunlight. Vines with bright flowers, giant fuzzy fronds, and a plethora of other small greenery engulfed the trunks of the trees as if Mother Nature had gotten a little drunk and generous with her plant life Bedazzler.
“You were going to stab him in the back like a coward. Now you’ll die like a coward.”
He was already intended for marriage in less than three weeks. His betrothed, whom his mother had selected only a month ago, was a sensible choice. Still, if the human was his mate, he’d have a valid reason to deny the betrothal.
“Oh. My apologies. Your kind is okay with stealing defenseless humans and locking them up for God knows what, but they draw the line at eating sentient beings.”
My mother is…powerful. She’ll want to make sure my wife is a strong female so our children will be strong.”
“That isn’t how mating works. Our people view it as sacred. Marriage is more of a duty.”

“Stay alive. Stay alive. Stay alive,” he swayed over and over, putting all the force he could muster into the demand. As though the universe sensed the importance of speed, his pace suddenly increased. His feet carried him across the desert faster than he’d ever gone before. Without stopping, he peered down at his hands and saw his marks. Bright blue and taunting.
“You helped me survive out in the forest when I knew so little. Let me help you survive here.”
