She indicated a little scrap of fabric beside Elizabeth on the bed. Elizabeth took it up, and a tartan pattern became visible in the dim light. “I found it in your room when we were putting out the fire. I think the culprit left it behind.”

Nothing ever came of this scrap of fabric, so why was it mentioned? How did the culprit get into her room? How did he lose the piece of fabric? Where did he get the key to lock her in?
