Many states assume that anyone with a positive coronavirus test has died from the disease, no matter what their actual cause of death. As the director of the Illinois Department of Public Health explained in April, “If you were in hospice and had already been given a few weeks to live, and then you were also found to have COVID, that would be counted as a COVID death. This was the case with my mother in law. Already quite frail. Already in a nursing home "rehabbing" from surgery after a broken hip. Covid spread in the nursing home, and that was it for her. She did not die from covid, she died with covid.
