Danamain, the true Mist Born. Which is a damn myth.”
“You must discover your truth so that, moving forward, you will be at the strongest you can be.”
“Who are the two who know your weakness?” I asked him suddenly, and he jerked his head at the rapid change of subject. I didn’t take him by surprise a lot, but I had. He laughed bitterly. “My sister and my mother. One who is my enemy, and the other I assume is dead.” I grabbed his hand. “You will take your sister down. She stole from you, and it’s time for her to pay for it.”
“Blood will be spilled,” he murmured, adding to the sexy serial killer vibe he was rocking.
“What’s wrong with me? Let’s see… My father fucked up my entire life; I was mated to a piece of shit shifter; got kidnapped; got over being kidnapped; decided that if I was going to die, I might as well go out with a bang. Ever since then…” “She’s let whatever random smartass thought she has fall from her mouth,” Shadow finished as he took the seat beside me.
If a single hair on Simone’s head is damaged when I return, I will put a stake through your heart, laugh out loud, and then shove one through your dick as well.”
“Shadowshine is exactly how I see us,” he rumbled. “One too dark, the other too light, and nothing but destructive storms between us.”
“Did you know that the royals of Shadow Realm have true mates?”
“They do,” she continued. “Sometimes they are betrothed at birth, and sometimes it happens when they find the perfect match and perform the ceremony. Before they find this one, they will be open sexually, but they never…” She swallowed roughly. “And I can’t reiterate the never enough. They never kiss someone who is not their mate.”
I found myself swept up by Midnight and Angel, both of them wrapping around me and holding on for life. “You almost died,” Angel said hoarsely, “and I was alone again.”
Shadow cut in. “I have no trauma.” Angel and I exchanged a single glance, and I was relieved when my tears faded against my laughter. “Okay, dude.” I chuckled. “Whatever you say.”
Shadow, Angel, Midnight, and Inky—I’d legit found myself a pack without even knowing I’d been looking for one.
“Despite recent events that suggest you’re tougher to kill than anticipated, we’re still fairly certain you’re not immortal. You bleed and you can die.” It’s hard to love a mortal when you are not, Midnight said unexpectedly.
“Can you not be both a person and a possession?” I shook my head. “No, I can’t.” He reached for me, hauling me up and out of the chair—ah, that was more like it—standing as he did, so I was trapped in his embrace. “Then why do I want to possess the person you are so badly, little wolf?” Jesus. Fuck. Fuck!
“Kiss me,” he demanded as he started to walk, and before I could lean forward, words spilled from my lips.
“In thousands of years, you’re the first being to cross my path and give me a reason to fight for a different future. I never saw you coming, and I never anticipated you would wreak such havoc on both me and my life. There was no one else who was worthy.” He thought I was worthy. The mess of a shifter with no pack and a true mate who’d rejected her.
Out of duty, I never kissed a single being in the time I was exiled from my world, but then you exploded into my life. Full of sass and fucking questions, with hair of a sunset, and a temper to equal my own. The gods themselves couldn’t have stopped me from claiming you.”
“That was you? But I loved my wardrobe; it always has the best clothing selection.” Shadow’s eyes darkened. “It was more enjoyable than I anticipated, dressing you in exactly what I wanted.” Now that time I’d had no underwear made perfect sense. Motherfucker. “Fuck, dude. You’re lucky that you have decent taste in outfits.” His grin was slow and predatory. “That red dress… I threw it in the options on a whim, not expecting you’d choose it.”
“You see flaws… I see character. No one is perfect, and if they’re pretending to be, it’s only to hide a fuck-ton of damage. No one deserves to exist like that, and in the end, it will drive them a little cray cray. So, for me, it’s all about embracing the quirks that make up Mera. Got me?”
You’re the friend I never even knew I was missing in my life. You’re my ride or die, and I will bury every body for you.”
“Mine,” he rumbled softly. My heart lurched. “Until such a time I say she’s not, Mera Callahan belongs to me.”
Not when I was a tiny bit in love with my devilish beast.
Shadowshine. We were going to rock that couple name… if we ever sorted our shit out.
“It is the Danamain,” Angel breathed before she shook her head like she couldn’t believe she’d just said that. “No. Seriously. You’re a myth.” Ixana breathed heavily. “You’re the original creature, Mainey? How? The literal Mother of Creatures?”
“You are what I am, which is a creature born of the Nexus.” I blinked at her. “I’m sorry. What did you just say?” A creature born of the Nexus.
“You can call yourself Mother Junior of the Creatures. You and I are born of pure creation.”
“Did you make Shadow and me have feelings for each other?” I choked out. Nothing I hated more than being manipulated, and it appeared she had done it with every part of who I was. Ixana lost it at that point and tried to push me into the river. “I knew you were trying to steal my mate,” she screamed, only to be stopped by Shadow’s huge-ass hand shoving her away. “Do not touch Mera,” he warned the ice bitch.
Shadow focused on me, looking for a moment longer than was polite. “She is extraordinary.”
“We’re almost to the royal compound,” Shadow said, his hand grasping mine. “And I expect you to be alive and functioning when we get there, or I will release the lava and let it wash this world clean.” He’d do it too; the truth was written across his face. “You’d burn The Concordes down for me?” I swallowed roughly. “I’d burn the entire world down for you, Sunshine.”
