“Mera,” Shadow said, his voice as serious as I’d ever heard it. “Step away from the mist.” I snorted, crossing my arms. “I’m afraid you’re too late for this lecture. About the same as advising a dude to wear a condom after his chick is already pregnant.”
Inky swelled, growing super large until it was a wall behind Shadow. Midnight apparently didn’t like that, bursting to life in a purple haze of whatthefuckery. “It’s dick measuring time,” I said, somewhat amused. My eyes met Shadow’s. “You gonna whip yours out too? You might be the underdog here, but I’d still put some money on you.”
Shadow laughed. “We’re not. My kin are well known to me, and I plan on killing a decent amount of them.” Phew. “Good to know.” A pause. “Also, you’re a touch scary.” Shadow shrugged. “I am what I am. If you can’t handle me, that’s your issue.”
The Concordes is the main mass of land. There are five kingdoms of royals sharing its territory. Trinity is Shadow’s, the strongest of the five. Then there is Holister, second in power, followed by Fraple, Glist’n, and Ashan.
“Last door on the left of the hallway before the library. It’s really nice, with a little lounge, television, and a marble bathroom! I mean, shit, it’s nicer than my parents’ house by a lot.” Her parents’ house was pretty damn fancy. “Shadow Bastard hasn’t let me near a television since he kidnapped my ass,” I grumbled. “I’m gonna have words with him about that.”
“Girl, you did not just insult the fucking Shadow Beast to his pretty face. What is wrong with you?” I shrugged, chewing and swallowing before I answered. “What’s wrong with me? Let’s see… My father fucked up my entire life; I was mated to a piece of shit shifter; got kidnapped; got over being kidnapped; decided that if I was going to die, I might as well go out with a bang. Ever since then…” “She’s let whatever random smartass thought she has fall from her mouth,” Shadow finished as he took the seat beside me.
“Why didn’t you show me those babies when we were in Torma? I’m a massive Twihard. Pretty sure I’m the perfect woman for you.” Thankfully, Lucien, the master vampire who didn’t glitter in the sun, took her enthusiasm in his stride. “Once again,” he murmured, “I’m coming to the conclusion that humans are my new favorite beings in the Solaris System.”
My wolf howled as we strode into the darkness, but it wasn’t from fear. She was excited for this adventure, and that could only mean one thing: she was going to get me into trouble at some point.
“Shadowshine is exactly how I see us,” he rumbled. “One too dark, the other too light, and nothing but destructive storms between us.”
A darker thought followed. At no point did he kiss me.
Sleep claimed me in seconds, but just before I was unconscious, I could have sworn I felt lips press to mine. “Our souls match, Sunshine.”
“How exactly do royals have children?” The question was out before I thought about the intricacies of it. Was I about to get the Shadow Realm’s equivalent of the birds and bees talk? Dannie’s grin was knowing. “It’s a joining of body and power. It requires you to exist in the head of your mate, and it’s intense to the degree that many can’t handle. Pleasure beyond what you can imagine, but it’s also how I lost energy to give to Shadow. So be aware of this.”
“You’d burn The Concordes down for me?” I swallowed roughly. “I’d burn the entire world down for you, Sunshine.”
