“That’s Spindrift. Tearoom by light, bloodhouse by dark.”
“We were made for trouble, you and me.”
They made every payment for the building—on time. “Time to get your ears cleaned then,” Arthie said, betraying nothing. “Then why do you look like you want to kill me?” the sergeant asked with a smirk. “Oh, that’s just my face,” Arthie replied. “One gets a taste for blood when you have to lick your own wounds, you see.”
“Now,” she commanded. “But—how?” he protested. “The vampires outside the city!” “We’re holding your life in our hands, and you’re worried about someone taking a sip out of you?” Jin asked.
Vampires were victims just as much as humans lately, disappearing without a trace.
The lighter a guard’s uniform was in color, the higher they were ranked. His uniform was snow white. A captain.
“But I doubt I’m the only high captain who thought you might be of use. I’m offering you a deal. The others won’t be so friendly.” She knew cunning when she saw it. “I don’t like being threatened.” “Then don’t let them threaten you.”
“I’m no criminal. I still work for the law that you break by breathing.”
It wasn’t as if vampires were easy to differentiate from humanfolk. They didn’t need to breathe, but often did out of habit. When well-fed, they had pulses and heartbeats. When cut, they bled the blood they’d drunk.
there was something to be said about a girl who knew everything about everyone and a boy more mysterious than the moon.
“You’re a monster,” Lambard whispered. “A monster would shove a barrel down your throat until you handed it over. I like to think I’m quite civilized.” Arthie regarded her fingernails. “Oh, and I also don’t steal. So please don’t insult me.” Lambard huffed a wet sob. “You did your damage and swore you’d never return.” “I’m not a plague, Official. You broke your oath, and here I am. Your reckoning.”
“Now they’re firing at us!”
“Really, love. You ought to be a fortune teller,” Jin said,
He landed almost soundlessly. Landed was the wrong word, because he was defying gravity.
“Touch her, and you will all die. Have I made myself clear?” No one breathed. “Have I made myself clear?” Jin repeated,
Jin angrily grabbed a dustpan. “Well, listen here, you overgrown mosquito: Shut up.”
“We were made for trouble, you and me.”
“Listen for the bells,” Arthie reminded. “And don’t die,” Jin joked. “That’s the one thing I haven’t mastered,” Matteo said with a dramatic sigh.
“I do indeed,” Matteo intoned solemnly, leaning toward the other vampire. “Someone who left his fashion sense in the grave.”
“Killing us is no easy task,” Jin said. “We’re annoying like that.”
Half human, half vampire. Her growth trickled to an end when she neared sixteen.
“They’ll appoint a new mask soon enough.” “Or maybe Arthie here can take the reins,” Matteo teased. “Nope. I’ll be busy rebuilding Spindrift,” she scoffed. “Why save the world when you can have tea?”
