When a slave is drunk, the slaveholder has no fear that he will plan an insurrection; no fear that he will escape to the North. It is the sober, thinking slave who is dangerous, and needs the vigilance of his master, to keep him a slave.
Religious slaveholders, like religious persecutors, are ever extreme in their malice and violence.
temporal wants supplied, the spirit puts in its claims. The slaveholders, with a craftiness peculiar to themselves, by encouraging the enmity of the poor, laboring white man against the blacks, succeeds in making the said white man almost as much a slave as the black slave himself. There are seventy-two crimes in the state of Virginia, which, if committed by a black man (no matter how ignorant he be), subject him to the punishment of death; while only two of these same crimes will subject a white man to the like punishment. What is this but the acknowledgment that the slave is a moral, intellectual, and responsible being. The manhood of the slave is conceded.
