I jumped at every sound, convinced every creak or strange noise was Aiden breaking into my condo. It didn’t make any logical sense, since my condo is on the second floor and he’d have to get buzzed in at the lobby first or scale the building to get to me, but it didn’t stop the fear. I tossed and turned for hours before finally giving up on the idea of sleep at three.
“We did the best we could, given the circumstances,” I say in our defense. “You were a mess. An absolute mess. And we lived with monsters. Did you forget that?”
