Go Up for Glory

The one certainty is that a man can never be certain of what he thinks. He can only strive and learn and fight against the frustrations of his life and continue that struggle to the point that he develops a philosophy.

I have fought in every way I know how. I fought because I believed it was right to fight. I think that no man should fear the consequences because every man must do that which he believes is right.

“Who am I? “What am I? “Where am I going?” Perhaps I will always march to the distant drum. Perhaps I will never catch the beat of the tune. But I will try.

there was something deep and underlying—a disquieting factor—the exact nature of which I am probably still not fully aware.

It is not just money. It is far more important. It is the challenge and the pride of being a world champion and of playing for it. Perhaps, in the final essence, that is the true psychology. A band of men playing for a goal. Just a bunch of men, who understand each other’s faults, going flat out for the championship. Maybe, when you hit that point, you have touched upon the true beauty of sports.

If I had a wish to make on the basis of this printed word, it is that this book should stand up twenty years from now or a hundred years from now as an honest and accurate statement of what the world was like for one man at one time.
