Nightwalkers—or night demons, as he sometimes called them—fed on human fear. They hunted at night and plagued human dreams to indulge on the fear they induced.
Daylight was beaming through the cracks in the blackout curtains when my spirit snapped free and I opened my eyes. For a second, I forgot where I was.
“You’re welcome. But I sleep during the day, and I keep my house tidy. That shitstorm you’ve made of your car isn’t going to fly at my place. Understood?”
His laugh died on a melodic slide.
“I only pick on the boys I like,” I said with a wink.
“Nyx, I said I’m fine.” It wasn’t an angry, defensive snap, like we’d seen a lot when he was clearly not fine, so I changed the subject.
“Do you have any idea what it’s like to be an ex-con? No decent jobs hire felons, and you can’t sign a lease or a buy a car without income. I lost everything. Would you have me live in squalor?”
Maybe we are all just spirits masquerading in bodies, unchangeable at our core despite what our brains think they know—or don’t know.
