“Would that prove to you that this marriage is real?” he asks, his thumb smoothing back and forth over my mangled flesh. “If I took you again? Was the first taste of ruin not enough for you? Do you still crave my darkness, little one?”
“Yes, Jesus, please. Right there.” “No saviors here,” he says, teeth grazing my forehead. “Just me, your husband, dragging you to hell with him.”
“An ache I have no right to feel, no right to indulge, but God, I can’t help it sometimes. Anyone glances in your direction, and I’m tempted to rip their fucking heart out. I like knowing you feel it too.”
“If you’re jealous, I’m a goddamn psychopath.”
“You. Make. Me. Feel. Alive.”
“All the men would be so fucking angry with me for getting to be with you.” His voice breaks, as if he’s losing himself to the fantasy. “And the women too, mad that you’ve attained what none of them ever could. And all they’d be able to do is watch.”
