“Do you know why I’m a shadow, Princess? It’s because no one notices when I’m gone.”
I shake Kyle’s words away, refusing to allow them weight. They do remain in my head, though. They grow and magnify until they’re the only thing I can think of, because I did notice when he was gone. I did more than notice. It ripped me apart from the inside out, and I’m still not sure if the wound will ever heal. Now, I have to marry him and dig the knife deeper with my own hands.
“Those who say women can’t go far in this world are afraid of what the likes of you can do. That’s why you have to be careful and smart, because your enemies are more than you can count or see. Don’t look at this marriage as misery, look at it as an opportunity to stay in a position of power, even from the background. That’s the only way you can protect yourself and everyone you love.”
Our eyes clash and, for a second, I think he’s seeing straight through me. Maybe he’ll completely ignore me, causing my mission to fail before it even gets started. But then, his hands stop typing on the keyboard and his lips part. It’s the slightest bit, but it’s all the reaction I need to walk toward him at a slow—and hopefully seductive—pace. His attention remains on me as the Italians talk about some security problems in one of their clubs. Kyle follows my every movement as if he’s expecting me to reach under my gown, retrieve a gun, and shoot him in the heart.
When his eyes finally come back to my face, he gives me a questioning glance that silently asks, What are you doing? Before my nerves get the better of me, I sink to my knees in front of him. Time to snatch my power back.
“Eye for an eye, Kyle. You know I believe in that. So next time you let a woman throw her arms around you, know I’ll find another man to throw my arms around. Fuck a woman and I’ll fuck two men—and a woman, if I’m in the mood.”
“Don’t attempt to play with my fire, Rai. The moment a man so much as looks at you, let alone touches you, I will slice his fucking throat and watch as life leaves his eyes so he knows in every last second that he shouldn’t have touched what’s mine.”
It’s all over now.
Fuck my heart. I will crush it and Kyle before anyone is able to harm my family.
My eyes slowly close and a tear slides down my cheek as a frightening type of void grips me in its clutches. While I blackout, Kyle’s words keep playing at the back of my head.
Rai is nothing. I’ll just leave her behind.
