The truth isn’t what you see. It’s what you make of it. There’s no such thing as a wholesome truth or a perfect reality. There are people and agendas. There is peace and war. There is losing and winning.
Igor’s son, the husband I just willingly chose, is none other than the one who stabbed my heart then walked all over it. Kyle fucking Hunter.
When the hurricane hits him out of nowhere, he’ll understand why storms are named after women.
“Do you know why I’m a shadow, Princess? It’s because no one notices when I’m gone.”
“Those who say women can’t go far in this world are afraid of what the likes of you can do. That’s why you have to be careful and smart, because your enemies are more than you can count or see.
Rai was born to conquer and crush anyone who defies her or poses a threat to her family. She never once stopped or hesitated, her gender be damned. That woman is more tenacious than most of the men I’ve met. And because of that, she’s dangerous to my mission.
“Take care of her,” he tells me in a low tone only I can hear. I’ll do more than take care of her, old man. I’ll ruin your entire empire through her. “It’ll be a miracle if he takes care of himself,” she mutters under her breath. Sergei clears his throat, kisses her head, and then offers her his hand. She kisses it, then I’m forced to do the same to show respect and blah fucking blah.
“What are you looking at?” she snaps through gritted teeth without cutting off her concentration on the priest. “You, Princess.” “Focus.” “I will do the focusing thing later when we consummate our marriage.” “Kyle!” she hisses. “What? You’re the one who’s tempting me.” “You’ll be far from tempted when I kick you in the balls.” “Kinky—I love it.” I lower my voice. “Does this mean I get to use toys?” “Toys to choke the life out of you, maybe.” “I had other types in mind. You know, the ones that make you scream for more.” The priest clears his throat, and I motion at him to continue. “Never mind

She tastes like addiction and bad decisions, and yet I would still come back for a hit every day.
“What are you doing?” “Consummating our marriage, Princess. It’s long overdue.”
The only thing that stops me from doing so is her drunken state. I might be immoral, but I’m no rapist. Knowing her episodes, she’ll have little to no recollection of this in the morning, and I will not be integrated into her mind as the one who fucked her when she was wasted.
I kiss her like this is our first and last time, like I’ve been deprived of it for life, and I probably have. Why the fuck wasn’t I kissing this woman before?
Leaving this woman behind will probably be the hardest part of my mission once I’m done.
“Eye for an eye, Kyle. You know I believe in that. So next time you let a woman throw her arms around you, know I’ll find another man to throw my arms around. Fuck a woman and I’ll fuck two men—and a woman, if I’m in the mood.”
“Don’t attempt to play with my fire, Rai. The moment a man so much as looks at you, let alone touches you, I will slice his fucking throat and watch as life leaves his eyes so he knows in every last second that he shouldn’t have touched what’s mine.”
Kyle, though, makes sure to come inside me every time, as if he’s really planning to impregnate me. The joke’s on him, though. Not only did I take the morning-after pill, but I also got myself a birth control prescription. My body reacted badly to the shot in my teens, so I had to resort to taking the pills. At the end of the day, this celebration is null and void. In a week or so, I’ll pretend I lost the child or that Kyle spoke too soon before we could make sure. Sergei will be sad, but he’ll understand the loss. Because there’s no way in hell I’d let Kyle put a baby inside me.
I have no idea what she sees when she studies my face, but it’s one of the few times I show her my truest form, the one she stupidly wants to know. If she does, it’ll be game over for her. But instead of the disgust I expected—hell, fear would’ve made sense too—Rai removes her hands from her mouth and seals her lips to mine. She’s…kissing me. Rai is kissing me when I’m ruthlessly using her body and showing her the monster I truly am, the monster who left her because she has enough monsters to deal with. I bite her lower lip, a last-ditch effort to make her snap out of it, but she licks my

“You were always meant to be mine, Rai. Quit fucking fighting it.” “Then quit hiding from me.” “I’m not hiding.” “You’re running.” “Yes, Rai, I’m running, and I’ll screw you over on the way.
