Ralph was the only person I considered a true friend.
I was going to bill Josh for all my gas expenses when he returned, just out of spite.
Put it—oh, the DVD.
I was playing with fire, but that was better than standing out in the cold alone.
I’m sorry, honey, but it’s over, I told my poor heart. You don’t belong to me anymore.
knowing we needed to figure out where we stood before we spiraled into a mess of misunderstandings and uncertainty.
So yes, we’re fucking exclusive.”
Probably, but I didn’t care.
“Jealous, Sunshine?” he purred. “I like this side of you.”
“You want to fuck, we fuck. You want to date, we date. You want to call me your boyfriend, I’ll call you my girlfriend. But for now, let me take care of that needy little pussy of yours, hmm?”
“This is Alex.”
Free to talk? He was still inside me!
“Don’t make a sound,” he warned. “This is an important call.”
There was something so dirty and delicious about fucking while his partners prattled on, clueless.
Awkward with a capital A.
“I’ll drain every fucking lake and ocean in the world if I have to.”
A tiny crystal tear slipped from her eye. “Alex…”
you’re not really my daughter.”
“I didn’t fight for custody for you. I did it for Josh. He’s actually my son. Test confirmed it. My legacy, my heir.
Unfortunately, courts almost always side with the mother except in extraordinary circumstances, so…” He shrugged. “I had to engineer an extraordinary circumstance.”
It was like God dropped the opportunity into my lap.
I was tempted to let you drown for real.” Another flash of teeth. “But I wasn’t that coldhearted.
It’s pretty poetic, actually. She died of the very thing I’d wanted to frame her for—at 4:44 a.m., no less. The unluckiest time.”
“God really does smile on me, doesn’t he?”
I couldn’t help noticing none of them were “I love you too.”
If there was ever proof that the universe had a sick sense of humor, this was it.
Congratulations again on your engagement.” I emphasized the last word.
I’ll make it up to you.” “You better.” His lips quirked.
Sunshine. If you’re in New York, I’m in New York.”
“I won’t lie unless the truth hurts you.”
“Sure. I’ll drop it.” I tossed my napkin on the table, my own frustration boiling over. “I’m also leaving. I’ve lost my appetite.”
That pulled a small smile out of me. She didn’t like him either. Attagirl.
God, this girl. She had no clue what she did to me.
“You don’t look so well. Stressed over losing your job?”
And the worst part was, I had to do it. I would give her up if it meant saving her.
Why do you think his business took so many hits over the years?”
That’s my girl. Hate me. Don’t cry over me. Never cry over me. I’m not worth it.
“I was wrong. It was never Michael. Was it, Uncle?”
He hadn’t liked me, but he also hadn’t cared about having me in his house, because he wasn’t the murderer.
“You touched what was mine.”
hurt what was mine.”
damn unlovable?
You are the light to my dark, Sunshine. Without you, I’m lost.
Every kiss, every word, every second that I had treasured…tainted.
the one who’d believed in light and love and the goodness of the world. That girl was gone.
“Like you’re about to, ah, cry.” He flinched, no doubt aware that even though he’d intercepted Ava’s 911 call and pulled the team together in record time, that wouldn’t shield him from my wrath.
I may not have killed her physically, but I had killed her spirit, her innocence. The part of her that believed the best in people and saw beauty in the ugliest of hearts.
